I posted last week about a New Jersey dungeon that had been forced to close. Here’s an update on the story for those who are wondering!

The man who hosted S&M parties in the basement of his Bloomfield Avenue business issued an appeal to the Township Council this week, telling officials the dungeon is a haven for people with alternative lifestyles and should be allowed to reopen.

Ed Dougherty, co-owner of Dressing for Pleasure, a fetish-wear boutique, said the parties, which were halted in June when municipal officials found numerous violations, have been occurring for three years without any problems or complaints from neighbors.

Dougherty, 50, suggested council members visit his business to meet some of his friends and customers.

“You might be enlightened,” he said.

Though Dougherty found a receptive audience in at least two council members – Mayor Jerry Fried said there is “gray area” about whether the dungeon can operate, while 2nd Ward Councilman Cary Africk told Dougherty the council will “work with you” – the council has no jurisdiction.

Dougherty must appeal the municipality’s decision to shut down the dungeon to the Zoning Board.

He asked the council to draft a resolution in support of Dressing for Pleasure or some other measure of support that he can bring to the Zoning Board.

After a long phone conversation with Fried, Dougherty is hopeful that his dungeon can reopen.
