Broadway BDSM

girl-in-latex-16.jpgBroadway has never been my can of Mountain Dew. I’m not a tea drinker, so there you go. While I can appreciate the effort that goes into these shows night after night, year after year, I just don’t find many of the shows to be all that stimulating. I don’t know if it’s the production, the subject matter, or the kind of audience that frequents the theater. I suspect it’s a little bit of all of those rolled into one big, silly dance number.

Since the U.S. is pretty much the last developed nation not to have a government subsidized theater system, most of the shows tend to appeal to the masses. They frequently get stymied by boundaries and envelopes instead of pushing them. Aside from that, however, Broadway shows just seem to be missing something and I think I know what it is: porn.

“Tell me more. Tell me more,” you say. Sure, there’s plenty of ‘Summer Lovin” in these shows but we need some more full-on Hakuna Mata-ting to keep the shows interesting. I want to see less Cats and more pussy. Instead of pirouetting, I want to see someone Rum Tum Tugging himself.

One show is quickly changing my opinion of the theater. It’s called Spring Awakening. According to the literature, it was “adapted from German playwright Frank Wedekind’s then-scandalous 1891 play, Spring Awakening [and it]  looks at the angst of high school students and their sexual awakening in repressed 19th-century Germany.” Fraught with teenage sex scenes, the show is garnering some critical praise. Various scenes include a naked breast, masturbation, and even sadomasochism. The show it is both turning heads and raising heads of its theater-goers with its frankness. It just might be worth the inflated ticket price to see it.

Now, I’m not suggesting every Broadway production should bare all and pander to my dirty desires, but Mamma Mia!, it wouldn’t hurt to have characters Grease each other up every so often now would it?
